Day Trips from Koh Samui
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Ang Thong National Marine Park
USD 90, 110 (boat, park fee, lunch, kayak)This 42-island archipelago is the classic Samui excursion: sheer cliffs, salt-water lagoons, and empty coves you can claim for an hour. You'll hear macaques rustle overhead while paddling kayaks into hidden inlets that smell of wet limestone and seaweed.
Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan snorkeling circuit
USD 120, 140 (catamaran, island boat, gear, lunch)Three tiny islands joined by a sandbar give you shallow coral gardens where you can taste sea spray and watch orange clownfish dart between anemones. The boat ride itself is half the fun: flying fish skitter off the bow and the Gulf shimmers like molten metal.
Koh Phangan Full-Day Sail
USD 95, 120 (sail, meals, snorkel gear, transfers)Skip the party reputation and sail the quiet west side: bottle-blue bays, fishing longtails creaking at anchor, and beaches where the only sound is cicadas and charcoal grills starting up for lunch. You'll taste ginger-laced seafood curry served right on deck.
Mu Ko Anthong Discovery Dive
USD 225 (instruction, gear, two dives, lunch, park fee)Even non-certified divers can blow bubbles here: the Discover Scuba program starts on deck at 9 a.m. and by 11 you're 12 m down, feeling cool thermoclines and watching barracuda hover like silver spears.
Pig Island (Koh Madsum) & Koh Tan kayak combo
USD 45, 55 (boat, kayak, guide, fruit)Koh Madsum's beach has friendly beach pigs that trot through the shallows while you snorkel above brain coral. Paddle the 600 m channel to Koh Tan and you'll hear only your own paddle drip and the occasional long-tail engine echoing across glassy water.
X Quad Waterfall & Mountain ATV
USD 135 (driver + passenger ATV, guide, lunch, transfers)You'll roar up red-dirt switchbacks between durian orchards, cool air rushing past, then plunge into shaded forest where cicadas drill the soundtrack. The payoff is a secret pool under Namuang waterfall, cold enough to make your skin tingle, and a charcoal-grilled chicken lunch you can smell long before you park.
Sunrise SUP & Yoga brunch
USD 95 (SUP, yoga, sauna, brunch, transfers)Paddle out while the eastern horizon turns cantaloupe orange, water so smooth you can see your board's shadow glide across sand patches. Era guides you through gentle flows, the air smells of salt and pandan incense, then you refuel on homemade coconut yogurt and dragon-fruit granola.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Cooking class with Geng & O Family
USD 80Start at a local market where chili smells sting the nose, pound curry paste until lemongrass oil perfumes your fingers, then eat what you cooked under a shady jackfruit tree in Geng's garden. You'll leave with a pocket-sized recipe booklet stained by coconut milk.
Secret Buddha Garden & Tar Nim Waterfall loop
USD 35 (driver, water, park entry)Wind up the mountain past papaya groves to a mossy statue park where stone monks smile under dripping leaves. Ten minutes farther, Tar Nim's cascade thunders into a pool cool enough to make you gasp, perfect reset before lunch.
Bang Rak long-tail sunset & street-food hop
USD 20 (boat share, food)Cruise the bay at golden hour, engine puttering while you sip lukewarm Singha and watch fishing lamps flick on. Back on land, follow the charcoal smoke to Bang Rak's night stalls for grilled pork neck sticky with honey.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- ✓ Book island-hopping trips the afternoon before, boats fill fast in high season and weather holds can shift departure times.
- ✓ Pack reef-safe sunscreen. Rangers at Ang Thong will confiscate chemical sprays at the park gate.
- ✓ Bring a dry bag even on calm days. Speedboat wakes splash phones perched on seats.
- ✓ If prone to seasickness, choose the bigger Lomprayah catamarans over small speedboats, ride is smoother and you can sit aft for fresh air.
- ✓ November to January sees jellyfish drift near Koh Tao. Ask crew if vinegar bottles are on board before you jump.
- ✓ ATV tours get muddy June, October; closed shoes and a bandana over your face turn the ride from misery to fun.
- ✓ Most piers charge 20 THB for toilet paper, stash pocket tissues beforehand.
- ✓ Cash is king on Koh Madsum and Koh Tan. No ATMs and only one beach bar accepts cards with a hefty fee.
